SHU TAKAHASHI
BIOGRAPHY
1930 June 30. Born in Miyauchi, Abiki-mura, Hiroshima prefecture, Japan, to Yuichi and Tsuruyo Takahashi. Father, owner of a photographic studio, Fukuyama city.
1948 Having completed the lower secondary school, started working. Casual jobs.
1950 March. Moved to Tokyo at age 19. In spite of mother's opposition to his artistic aspiration, entered Musashino Academy of Fine Arts.
1961 December. Received Yasui Prize.
1963 November 11. Left For Rome, Italy, as a scholarship student. Since then has been living and working in Rome.
1987 February. Received Education Ministers Art Encouragement Prize.
1988 June. Received Japan Arts Grand Prix (This award is given to one of the best works of art of the year by the Shinchosha).
1994 November. Received National Cultural Prize.
1996 April. Proffessor of Kurashiki University of Science and The Arts.
1998 February. Produced a thick drop curtain “Koge” (Rosso Fastoso [Gorgeous Red]) for the stage of the new gymnasium of Hiroshima Prefectural Fuchu Senior High School.
1999 March. Set up the Hiroshima Okayama Prefecture Art Exhibition of Students (HOPES) together with Fukuyama Museum of Art (in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture) and opened the first exhibition as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee.
September. Selected original wines for the Commemorative Sales of the 170th Anniversary of the Founding of Tenmaya Department Store and produced the labels out of his works for sale. This undertaking was continued every autumn in the following six years.
2001 May. Contributed an article “Watashi no Deatta Italia Bijutsu 10-sen” (Ten Selections of the Italian Art I Encountered) to the culture page of the Nihon Keizai Shinbun.
November. Made a plan of the “Contemporary Art Biennale for Senior High School Students of Japan” sponsored by Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts and held the first exhibition at the Kojima Torajir? Memorial Hall of the Ohara Museum of Art.
2002 June. Built an atelier in Sami Beach, Kurosaki, Tamashima, Kurashiki City.
November. His collection of prints “Ogon Tenchi” (the Earth of Gold) was published by the Executive Committee for the Publication of the Original Prints, Okayama.
2004 September. Moved to Sami Beach, Kurashiki City after living forty-one years in Rome.
October. Set up the “Shu art studio” and opened an art course “’the Class for Mothers and Children’ Atelier Gaga.”
December. Received the First Marusen Grand Cultural Award from the Marusen Foundation for the Promotion of Sports and Culture, Okayama.
Contributed an article for seven times to the column “Ichi Nichi Ichi Dai” (One Day, One Subject) published in the evening edition of the Sanyo Shimbun.
2005 January. His eleven masterpieces were permanently displayed at the Martial Arts Hall of Munetada Shrine in Okayama as “Shu Takahashi Permanent Art Hall.”
March. Set up and opened the exhibition of “Kurashiki Contemporary Art Biennale, Western Japan” as the chairperson of the Steering Committee.
May. Held the “Sami Art Festo” in Sami Beach, Kurashiki sponsored by Shu Art Studio. Since then he has continued the festival as an annual event.
2006 January. Received the 64th Sanyo Shimbun Award (for cultural merits)
April. Convened a meeting for establishing the Shu-Ou Foundation Award for Art Studies Abroad (Aug. 31)
Held a press conference for announcing the establishment of the Shu-Ou Foundation Award for Art Studies Abroad
2007 January. Made plans and supervised the exhibitions at the Art Space inside the Junpu?kai Health Care Centre.
March 7th. Held the first award giving ceremony for the Shu-Ou Foundation Award for Art Studies Abroad.
2008 September 3rd. Received the Okayama Prefecture Miki Kinen Prize
November 29th. The proceedings of a joint discussion meeting centring round Jakucho Setouchi was appeared in the Sanyo Shimbun.
2009 September. His portdolio, “Yukyu eno Kaiki” (Ritorno all’Etrnita [Return to the Eternity]) was published by the Executive Committee of the Exhibition.
2010 February. Received the Okayama Prefecture Culture Award.
